Re: Upgrading 1.30.2 to 1.32.3 on U18.04
Ok. So I should be able to 1) Bring down 1.30 2) Remove the old PPA 3) $ sudo apt upgrade 4) Bring up 1.32.3 and let it do it's upgradingly stuff 5) Bring it back down again once it's done, and then 6) Unmount those 2 deep mounts and put the relevant paths in the configuration manually, at my leisur...

Re: Upgrading 1.30.2 to 1.32.3 on U18.04
I mean the practice which results in this in my fstab: /zmdata/1/zoneminder/images /var/cache/zoneminder/images none defaults,bind 0 2 /zmdata/1/zoneminder/events /var/cache/zoneminder/events none defaults,bind 0 2 recommended for 1.30. I know there's a ZM term of art for that, but I can't remember ...

'Remove the old PPA first'. Great tip!
The upgrade script, will it automatically unwind the overlay mount thingamajig? Or am I going to have to do that manually before I start the new version?

Re: Upgrading 1.30.2 to 1.32.3 on U18.04
Yup, confirmed: I'm a doofus. Isaac's PPA now shows up in Synaptic as an upgrade, and I'll run it tonight when I have some time free. Thanks again to Isaac for maintaining a PPA for the package. ${EXCUSE}, but I'll chip in some coin when I can. ( Just now, the variable is filled with "being evi...

Sorry; I apparently did not read *closely* enough the Easy Way, where it notes there's a new PPA for each release. I'll go add
$ add-apt-repository ppa:iconnor/zoneminder-1.32
and try again.

Re: Stuck in Privacy Page - Can't Access Console (New Install)
Indeed. I strongly recommend -- and I recommend this having been stupid enough to not do it -- that if it's your first ZM install, you install it on a documented/supported platform, even if you have to dredge up a spare box to do that on. Once you've installed it and it works, you'll have aslightly ...

Re: Upgrading 1.30.2 to 1.32.3 on U18.04
I suppose I should have said that the 1.30.2 install's been running fine for almost 2 years, with 12 cams at 720p on an i7 with 8GB of RAM and 16GB of swap.

Upgrading 1.30.2 to 1.32.3 on U18.04
I've read the install guide and the wiki Easy Way's and I still have a couple questions. My 1.30.2 install appears to be from APT on the Ubuntu LTS install; the box is checked in Synaptic anyways. But that also appears to be the most recent packaged version for U18. First: is that correct? If not, I...

Re: Firefox Extended Support Release
I'm not sure what it depends on, but it depends.
I upgraded to 57, and have -- so far -- been having no problems with anything, including ZM and montage -- where everything's faster, and the datestamps in the scroller are a readable size now (where before they were in Flyspeck 3).

Re: 3 * HikVision 4MP cameras taking too much CPU
Indeed. To expand: if your camera is sending a stream in MPEG, not MJPEG, then ZM has to pick that apart into frames, so that it can do things like motion detection -- and if the encoding is dense, then that takes a lot of CPU, or it takes an FFMPEG that knows how to talk to hardware that does the d...

Re: HOWTO:Zoneminder recording if your 'iPhone' is out of home
Turn your DHCP lease time down to 15 minutes, and then query the router by name?
That'll require some scraping on the router, probably, unless it's high-end enough to do SNMP.

Re: Wansview IP Cams working nicely
Thanks much for the positive report; we always like to hear those. A 5 minute load average below 1 *per CPU core* is widely considered best. My experience of current Linuces is that you can get away with 2 per core pretty decently; at 3 per core you should start to worry. I have a Dell SC1430 that's...

Re: Performance tuning time
Ok, well, sure, bbunge, but MySQL says it's good up over 2GB, IIRC, and I'm peaking it at 500-something MB. Or did I misread the report? I don't particularly mind the exercise, but the bigger the hill it is to climb, the more justification I like to assemble for doing it, and I don't know that I'm t...
