Found an old drive that had ubuntu 14.04.1 running v1.28.0 and avoided doing upgrade or update. Works greats!

Isn't vlc in the following the graphical program vlc and therefore unneeded on a server version of zoneminder?

Using desktop was the problem. Lamp is not available on Desktop. In prior releases all the dependencies got figured out using apt-get zoneminder.

It use to be easy to install 1.27 zoneminder on ubuntu desktop. All the Easy Way 1.28 installs on Ubuntu require (not so easy way) server version of ubuntu. I believe it died when i did an update which sucked in changes from the iconner/zoneminder repository.
Since vlclibs seem essential for my ip cams, have tried 1.28 but no luck getting it all going. B-(

My system (ubuntu 14.04 with 7 1280x720 cameras) as reported by system monitor utilizes only 1.7 gigabytes of my ram and no swap space.
ipcs -m returns the shared memory segments which total up to 74 megabytes.
Are you sure there is a ram disk? I don't see one on my system.
