if i understand you right, you loved the live cd; but installing a live cd in top of another distro seems weird to me; if you liked it, why dont you simply click on the "install live cd" (or similar icon) thats on your desktop ? (that will avoid any other headaches;) are you using the zmla...

If you install from apt-get, you´ll get a little outdated version (because those packages must be assembled by someone first); i really suggest you intall using one of the wiki tutorials (ubuntu applies ok to debian), so you´ll get the subversion updated zoneminder that fix a lot of issues that yo...

regarding blank or blue monitors, i have a feeling its related to permissions on video device; what do you get when you issue ls -l /dev/video0 (or video1, video2, whatever your capture card assumes, if you are using one); also, try to run zmfix and tell if it makes any difference for you; good luck !
