You could use an encrypted filesystem for /. This would require a password to boot, and would not be trivial to set up. You could just encrypt the filesystem mysql is on, but that means manually mounting and starting mysql and zoneminder. Again, less than simple...

Sorry... Vacation. Much needed, I might add. :) The Live CD I believe you are speaking of is Red Hat based. I like Debian based, and Ubuntu is one of the easiest flavors of that. Once you install the OS, you can install the nice package zoneminder_1.22.3-6_i386.deb for Ubuntu, or directly from the r...

Splits never go as planned. For a good example, look at m0n0wall and pfsense. The documentation guy for both projects is the same guy. Many shared developers. And still the split doesn't pass much back... You just get to many people "with a good idea" going in different directions.

Oooopps... I jumped right into Ubuntu without going into why. LiveCDs run in ram and you have very little. Of the various distributions out, Ubuntu is one of the simplest, and the one I use most. It has to methods of install, a LiveCD, and an alt-install text based install CD. You could also use the...

What is going to be an issue is data volume. Assuming 80 good quality streams, you will need a lot of network, and a lot of fast disk, as well as some significant memory to buffer it. Then, how are you going to look at 80 streams? You might want to consider segmenting the network, and the server.

Ubuntu based Live CDs have issues with less than 256 meg of ram. If you want it on Ubuntu, install with the alt-install disk, and use the new deb package. It is getting very good, and more feedback won't hurt.

This is quite a bit of load for highres IP cams. Way out of my league to scope this hardware. The problem is that each image has to be decoded, analized and re-encoded. This taks some grunt work from the CPU. You may need to do a test implementation on a spare box with a few cams to see how bad the ...

Perhaps I should be more clear. :) I have made a business of "selling" open source solutions. I do not violate the GPL, and tell my customers that they can get the software free. What I provide is a supported solution that includes free software. You pay me so much a month, and get a suppo...

So many variables here... IP cams or composite cams? IP cams take more power at the CPU. So do some composite cards... How many cams, and at what frame rate? Do all of them need to be high resolution and high frame rate? Are any able to be black and white? How many clients will you need to stream? W...

Currently there is no pg in zm at all (except for whats in cvs otherwise it's not publicly available) so there is nothing yet to work on unless we can talk Phil in releasing that trunk. My self if I should ever decide to sell versions of ZM am perfectly fine with purchasing a license from mysql. I ...

Well, this is just not a viable option. The convoluted backports mean that the system will never dist-upgrade smoothly. The main advantage of the package management system is upgrades, and that just staked it in the heart. So... At this point it looks like Feisty with the tar.gz is the mos...

Is there an ETA on the new .debs? Dapper is a year old now, and not that secure. (I had to personally backport security packages like fail2ban) Anything I can do to help?
